After updating the Android TV home screen with Google TV, users were not that happy about the inclusion of ads right on the home screen. Not only this frustrated the users but also it interfered in the way of their entertainment.

Ads are something that we dislike. However, it is a source of generating revenue for companies, including Google. Now, with a recent update to Google TV, Google will now show autoplaying video ads on your home screen.

Yes! Google has taken yet another step to bring ads to your life, and too right in front of your home screen in the form of autoplaying ads.

Back in 2020, Google introduced a row of “Google Play Staff Picks”. Here, it formally showed an ad related to that specific movie or a show.

It is a no-brainer that no one wants to see ads or ads coming in the way of their content watching. Users were able to find their way around these ads.

Sadly, Google had other concrete plans for keeping the ads on Google TV, which is now a reality with the addition of autoplaying video ads.

Beware! Google TV video ads also include audio that is not muted by default

With the launch of the new Chromecast, Google introduced Google TV, which came with a “For You” tab. It basically showcased all of your favorite apps, along with shows/movies you have in progress.

Moreover, these also included some tailored recommendations based on your watch history. There is also a row of recommendations that usually featured an ad in the first slot.

Fast forward to now, as noted by 9to5Google, this row now behaves in an interesting new way. Now, the included video advertisement, which plays with no input from the user, also includes audio that is not muted by default.

So, by chance you have the volume to a high level, the video ads are surely going to grab your attention. Do note that these video ads just don’t play randomly on their own.

You need to move the cursor on the proper row for the video ads to play. There doesn’t seem to be a dedicated option inside Google TV Settings to disable these autoplaying ads.

Irritatingly, the video ads enter fullscreen mode after a few seconds of playback. You can exit these ads, but simply pressing any of the directional buttons on the remote.

The good thing about this is once the ads are done playing, Google TV won’t autoplay it again the next time the ad loops around. But if you go to another screen and return home, then these ads will start playing again.
