Google Messages Will Auto-Delete OTPs, But Only In India For Now

If you are a Google Messages user and live in India, then there is a piece of good news waiting for you. Notably, Google is updating its Messages app in India which gains a feature that will auto-delete OTPs from your phone.

This will help you get rid of the clutter in your messages inbox and also provide a layer of security as One Time Passwords if misused, can be pretty devastating.

In an official blog, Google also added that apart from auto-deleting OTPs from your phone, the Google Messages app also gains the ability to sort messages into categories.

This means that all of your personal messages will be sorted and kept in one place, and all of your banking notifications, promotional offer messages, etc. will be kept in another category.

OTPs become useless the moment you have entered them. So, keeping it safe inside your inbox doesn’t make any sense. All it would do is clutter your messages inbox and create a pile of OTPs.

This new update for Google Messages is really nice for those who want to keep their inbox organized and clean. However, do note that this update and the features that are coming with it are only available for users in India, for now.

Google Messages will automatically delete your OTPs after 24 hours

As you would expect, there is a 24-hour time limit before the OTPs will disappear from your inbox. Coming to the new sorting feature, all of your messages will now be sorted into categories such as personal, OTPs, offers, and transactions.

Both the features are quite nifty. Further, as noted by Google in the blog, to sort and organize the messages into different categories, Google will be making use of a machine learning model.

This is something pretty similar to what Gmail already offers. Moreover, the sorting process will directly happen on the device itself. This means it should work offline as well.

Although these features have been announced for the Google Messages India users, it is worth noting that the new features will go live “over the coming weeks” on Android phones.

Besides, you need to make sure that your device is running on Android 8 Oreo or above to take advantage of such cool features on Google Messages.

To enable the auto-delete OTPs feature, all you need to do is just tap the “Continue” button when you see a prompt asking you if you wish to enable the feature or not.
