Global App Store Use Is Growing, Especially For Games & Google

Global application market spending is up for the first half of 2021, including around $45 billion in mobile games revenue generated on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. In fact, according to Sensor Tower, that’s compared to just $65 billion in terms of spending on both markets during the same period.

Now, the growth of gaming, while hardly explosive, is impressive but not surprising. Especially given the arrival of Covid-19 and related lockdowns. and work-from-home trends. Gaming spend grew by approximately 17.9-percent year over year.

Breaking that down, Google’s Play Store saw an increase in revenue on games at a rate of 24.7-percent. That tracks with last year for the same period in terms of year-over-year growth on the revenue side. And it highlights Android’s comparatively rampant growth compared to Apple’s app marketplace revenue growing 13.5-percent in the same period. Although spending was down from last year’s year-over-year growth of around 25.5 overall.

What’s hot in mobile games in the first half of 2021?

In terms of which titles shone more than others, the majority of top titles weren’t those most might expect. Global top mobile games from Tencent, Pokemon Go, PUBG Mobile, Roblox, Genshin Impact, and other top app store titles were among those listed. But they weren’t at the top.

Many of the top revenue and download generators, on the global scale, are more casual app store games. Games such as Join Clash 3D and Garena Free Fire were at the top, for example. Those had 115.6-million downloads and 101.6-million first-time installs globally for the period, respectively. In-between titles such as Among Us, Subway Surfers, and Candy Crush Saga also made the cut. Placing fifth, sixth, and ninth, respectively.

This trend will likely continue

As noted above, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence indicates that this market trend was caused, by and large, by the ongoing pandemic. And that spending, while slowing compared to last year’s growth, is expected to continue. With global spending on mobile apps and games climbing to $64.9 million, that’s good news. At the very least, for mobile developers.
