Awards Android N and our App of the Month

It’s that time of week again where we get together to bring you the latest news from the world of Sony and Android, and what a week it has been. It was prizes galore, as the overall winners of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards were finally announced after a record breaking 230,103 submissions. We’ve been waiting patiently to find out who would take the top spots, and in the end it was Asghar Khamseh who was awarded the most coveted prize – L Iris d’Or Photographer of the Year. Khamseh’s award winning photo ‘Fire of Hatred’ was a powerful portrait series tackling the social issues around the violent act of acid throwing. Khamseh was announced as the winner of the $25,000 (USD) prize at an awards ceremony in London in front of all the industry leaders. Congratulations!

All the winning and shortlisted images will be exhibited at Somerset House, London from 22nd April – 8th May. The exhibition will also include a special dedication to Outstanding Contribution to Photography recipients, RongRong & inri. It’s definitely worth checking out – we will see you there!

Elsewhere this week, Sony had its very own achievements as it was recognised by the prestigious Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) and presented with a record five awards. The awards included: BEST DSLR ENTRY LEVEL: a68, BEST MIRRORLESS CSC PROFESSIONAL: a7R II, BEST CSC PRIME LENS: SEL85F14GM, BEST FULL-FRAME COMPACT CAMERA: RX1R II and BEST ACTION CAM: HDR-AS50. If you want to find out more about the award winning devices, you can check out the website.

reddit-logo (1)Moving on to the wider Android world, this month Reddit’s official Android app was released after months of anticipation, having been in beta since January. The Android app offers the core Reddit functionalities that users would expect, with key categories allowing you to submit content or just get stuck into conversation on your favourite topics, whether it’s space, data and analytics or animals doing funny things (a personal favourite).

You can check out our full review of the app on our blog or just download and test it for yourself.

Next up, some exciting news for you. Developers can now get the Android N Developer Preview on select Xperia™ Z3 devices. In case you haven’t heard of it, Android N is Google’s next software version, and to prepare early for its release, the Android N Developer preview is available now, leaving ample time  to incorporate developer feedback before the release.

For developers using select Xperia devices, you are able to flash the Android N Developer Preview on two variants of Xperia Z3 – versions D6603 and D6653. It’s safe to say there are exciting times ahead.

Unfortunately that’s all we have time for right now. We hope you have a great weekend.
