In-Depth Tutorial: Create and Share Your Custom Themes with the World

HTC Themes_header

Being able to customize your HTC device to look and feel exactly how you like might be one of the best feelings out there. That’s because your phone is an extension of who you are, and everything from the background wallpaper to notification sounds should represent that. This is where HTC Themes comes in handy.

In an earlier post, I gave you a quick crash-course on HTC Themes. In it, I taught you what Themes are and how you can quickly and easily find one that fits your lifestyle from thousands of user-made themes that are currently available for free.

As a continuation of this introduction to HTC Themes, today I want to show you how you can create your own custom theme and share it with the universe (or, at the very least, Planet Earth).

Note: Before getting started with creating an HTC Theme, please see the HTC Themes Design Guidelines. The content you share must be your own (meaning you created it), or you must get proper permission to share someone else’s work. Please be very careful using artwork that you yourself did not create.

Logging into HTC Themes

  1. In your desktop internet browser, go to https://themes.htc.com.
  2. Sign in to your HTC account. To create your own, go here.
  3. Click on THEME MAKER on the top navigation bar.

Once you’re logged in, this is where the fun starts…

Step 1: Start with your Home Screen Wallpaper

Let’s face it: Your home screen wallpaper is the face of your phone (no pun intended). That’s because it’s the screen you see most often whenever you turn on your phone, and it’s for this reason that making your wallpaper something you love is important.

To get started adding a custom wallpaper to your HTC Theme, push ADD IMAGE.

Next, choose the image you would like to use for your wallpaper.

Once you’ve selected and added your image, you can drag it around to align it the way you want. To preview how your image looks like on an HTC phone, just look at the HTC device to the right. When you’re ready to move onto the next step, tap NEXT.

Step 2: Choose the Category

Which category do you want your custom theme to live in? Well, you have some options:

  • Abstract
  • Animals
  • Architecture
  • Artistic
  • Design
  • Fantasy
  • Gaming
  • Illustration
  • Kid friendly
  • Lifestyle
  • Nature
  • Others
  • Peace & Love
  • People
  • Photography
  • Sports & Fitness
  • Travel & Adventure

Choose one by tapping it in the menu.

Step 3: Customize Your Wallpapers

What image do you want for your lock screen? How about the wallpaper image in the apps library or messages? Let’s start customizing these.

By default, your lock screen wallpaper is set as the same image as your home screen background—but, of course, if you’d like to change it, you absolutely can.

To get started changing the Lock Screen, Apps Library, Messages and Dot View images, just select one and, similar to before, tap Add Image to upload your wallpaper.

Once you’re finished selecting your wallpapers, tap Next.

Step 4: Selecting your HTC Themes color scheme

So you’ve selected your wallpapers. Now it’s time to select your color schemes. Here you can select colors to add accents to your theme.

Themes_8

To preview your theme, tap Preview (but don’t push Finish quite yet). When you’re done looking at the preview, tap Back to return to the previous page.

Step 5: Choosing your Icons

So far, you’ve chosen your wallpapers, theme category and color scheme. Next up? It’s time to choose your icons.

On the Icons page, you’ll be presented with 20 icon sets to choose from. To see how they could appear in your theme, select one and then view the preview to the right.

Select your icon set and push Next.

Step 6: Making your HTC device “sound” just right

You’ve customized everything about how your HTC Theme looks; now it’s time to customize how it sounds. In this next step, we’ll select your theme’s ringtone, notification and alarm sounds.

To select a sound, first tap Ringtone, Notification or Alarm. Next, select one of the colors and push play to listen to one of the preset sound options.

Themes_11

Once you’re ready to move on to the next step, select Next.

Step 7: Selecting Your Theme’s Font

The next step in creating your own custom HTC Theme is selecting the perfect font.

On the font page, you’ll be provided with 10 fonts to choose from, ranging from the simple Roboto to the more stylish Salsa. Which best fits your style? Choose wisely.

Themes_12

Ready to move on? Select Finish.

Step 8: Saving Your Theme

At this point, you’re finished with customizing your theme and there are just a couple more steps before you can share your theme with the world!

Next up? It’s time to save your theme. To do that, just give your theme a name, description, and provide some keywords.

Themes_13

Step 9: Publishing Your HTC Theme

Ready to publish and share your custom theme? To publish it, go to your HTC Themes page.

  • Go to: Your name in the upper right-hand corner > My Themes > My Creations.
  • Next, select the custom theme you want to publish to HTC Themes
  • Push Publish and continue with the on-screen instructions.

Select OK when asked if you want to publish.

Themes_14

At this point, your HTC Theme will be sent to our team for review. Once it passes review, it will be available for download in the HTC Themes store for any HTC customer to download!
