Google Hints That The App Drawer Is Not Going Anywhere

This year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) is now over, but we did see tons of interesting tech released during the trade show. Samsung, LG and Xiaomi definitely stole the show in Barcelona, as they’ve introduced their new flagship offerings. That being said, the next big trade show is in Berlin in September, but before that we’ll get to see quite a few separate events, and Google I/O is also upon us.

Speaking of which, as it’s the case every year, Google is expected to talk about the next version of Android during the Developers Conference. Android ‘N’ is next in line, and even though we still don’t know what will Google opt to call it, several names already popped up as a result of various guesses. No matter whether this will be Android Nutella, or Android Nougat, latest Google Maps add certainly did scare some people. Latest reports were claiming that Google plans to ditch the app drawer in Android N, and the company’s Google Maps ad added even more fuel to that fire. Well, luckily for us, Google has officially addressed the Google Maps video, and has pointed out that the video has portrayed an inaccurate version of the company’s UI, and that this UI does not represent any future software changes. This seems to be Google’s way of denying that they’ll remove the app drawer, because after all, that would be an extremely odd move by the company.

Quite a few China-based companies still don’t use the app drawer as part of their Android-based skins, they prefer to keep apps on homescreens instead, just like Apple. Anyhow, Android N is the next big version of Android, but we do not expect any major changes here, at least not in terms of the UI. Android N is expected to be yet another layer of polish on top of Android, just like Marshmallow was for Lollipop. We cannot be sure in any of this though, we’ll just have to wait and see what will Google introduce during Google I/0, as always. Either way, stay tuned, Google I/O rumors will probably start soon, we’ll keep you in the loop.
