Sony purchases Toshiba’s image sensor business for 19 billion yen

Sony announced earlier today that it has signed definitive agreement to acquire Toshiba’s CMOS image sensor business for a purchase price of 19 billion yen ($154 million). Sony is acquiring Toshiba’s 300mm wafer fabrication facilities (located at its Oita Operations), which manufactures CMOS image sensors and memory controllers.

Sony looks to complete the transfer of the facilities by the end of 31 March 2016, subject to the usual regulatory approvals. Sony will look to transfer Toshiba’s 1,100 employees working in CMOS image sensor engineering and design on completion. This move will further enhance Sony’s position as one of the leading suppliers of CMOS image sensors globally for a wide range of devices including smartphones.
