At IFA 2015 in Berlin we were able to get our hands on the latest and greatest from Nubia, the sub-brand of ZTE in China. The Nubia Z9 doesn’t set itself apart on looks so much, as it resembles a large number of other Chinese phones that look sort of like an enlarged iPhone 4/4s. Where it does set itself apart is on features and software, two areas where Chinese smartphone and tablet manufacturers have been placing an emphasis for a while now. Sure there’s definitely some hardware prowess here, including 4GB of RAM in some models and a Snapdragon 810 processor powering the experience, but it’s the Nubia skin over top Android that the company is really trying to sell here.
One of the biggest features the representatives from Nubia showed me were the screen gestures that help make some simple tasks a little bit quicker for users. Adjusting the brightness, closing all open apps, taking a screenshot and even taking pictures are all possible thanks to the new edge-gestures that Nubia has packed into the Z9.
