T.I.L.: Comcast has a desktop app for monitoring data usage

Internet access in Houston

If you’re a Comcast Internet customer, you probably know that, while the company has a 250-gigabyte data cap, it’s currently not being enforced in the Houston market. That’s not the case everywhere, particularly in Florida, where Comcast is testing a new approach that includes charging an extra $30 a month for unlimited data.

Given that you never know which way a cable giant will lurch, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how much data you’re using on Comcast. The company has a bandwidth meter on its website, but it’s a little hard to find. You can log into your account page and then go here to see it.

You also have another option. I discovered recently that Comcast has a software program that will monitor your data. The Xfinity Usage Meter is available for Windows or Macintosh computers, and you can download it here.

Run it, and you’ll be asked to log in with your Comcast credentials. Then, you’ll see the current month’s usage, as well as the amount of data you used for the previous three months.

There’s not much to it beyond this, though you can tell it how often to refresh the current usage, with the least amount of time being 3 hours. You do have to login to your account each time you run it, which is annoying.

You also don’t have to be on a computer connected to Comcast’s network to use the app. You can install it on your PC or Mac at work and monitor usage at home.
