Android How To: Enable Uncapped 4K Video on Galaxy Note 5

As most of you probably know, the Galaxy Note 5 can shoot 4K video but only 5 minute long videos. This is actually quite common with smartphones as of late. The biggest reason for this is the heat. Shooting 4K video outputs a lot of heat, and with smartphones, there’s not much place to put that heat. We’re seeing the same thing with the Sony RX100M4 actually. The other issue is space. 4K video takes up a lot of space, and with many smartphones only coming in 32GB or 64GB, sometimes even 16GB, there’s not a whole lot of space there. But, as is usual over at XDA, a developer has found a way to uncap that 4K video at 5 minutes.

Before we get started, you’ll need root. Which currently, the AT&T and Verizon models do not have root. Additionally, rooting your Galaxy Note 5 will also trip KNOX and keep you from using secure features like Samsung Pay. So take that into account before attempting to root your phone.

Now you’re going to need to download the Zip file and extract the SamsungCamera4.apk from it. Next you’ll need a system file explorer and navigate to system/apps/SamsungCamera4/ folder on your phone. Now backup everything in that folder, just in case you need it later. Once you’ve backed it all up, delete it. Now you’re going to place that APK you extracted into the System/Apps/ folder. Set the file permissions to rw-r-r. Now reboot your Galaxy Note 5, and you should be good to go.

The developer of this APK, or mod, has been able to do 4K recording at more than half an hour continuously. But the footage is still split up. Into about 4GB files, that are able 8-9 minutes in length. A pretty cool mod, but it does have its downsides, as usual. You’ll want to be sure you stop recording before your phone overheats, as it definitely will overheat. There’s a reason that 5-minute cap is there in the first place.

You can get all the necessary files, as well as help by hitting the XDA Forums thread which is located in the sources section down below.
