Streaming video is great, provided you have the Internet or a reliable data connection. Sadly, not all of us do, at all times, and if you’re stuck on a long flight, trapped in an airport for hours, or otherwise poorly situated, it can be a nightmare. Really, what are you supposed to do? Read a book? Thankfully Amazon has decided to spare us all that fate and has finally let you download movies from Prime.
Prime Cuts
First of all, you’ll need the Amazon app. For Android owners, this will involve downloading the Amazon Appstore app. Yes, this is dumb and obnoxious, but if you want to exploit Prime fully, it’s what you’ll have to do.
Once that’s done, find a Prime show, download it, and it’s yours. Amazon recommends plugging in your phone and leaving the app open, so essentially letting it download overnight. But hey, you’ll at least have something to watch on the plane.
Winding Amazon
Interestingly, we couldn’t find anything on the site about limits or requirements. It appears that provided you have, and keep, Amazon Prime, that you’re all set; you can just download as much as your phone can hold and watch as much as you want. Of course, that’s the rub, right there. When I experimented with the app, I filled up my phone surprisingly quickly. Amazon seems to be counting on video fans mostly only using this in a pinch, and would-be video hogs butting up against that hardware limit.
That said, it’s still an interesting, and useful, perk, even if it won’t replace the videos you stream. If you’ve got a trip coming up and a Prime subscription, now you’ve got more options than hoping the airport has a few paperbacks for sale.
