Nobody wants their network to go out; it’s annoying, and it’s an uncomfortable reminder of how much you depend on our mobile communications network for everything from music streaming to directions. Samsung, though, wants to ensure that you’re never, ever without the Internet. And they’re going to use a ridiculous number of tiny satellites to do it.
Satellite Of Love
If the whole “tiny satellites in space gives you Internet” thing sounds a little familiar, it might be due to the fact that it’s been proposed before. Micro satellites orbiting the Earth and granting us constant, high-speed Internet access is a pretty common idea for networking the planet.
The clever part is that Samsung’s worked out the guts. Essentially it would use RF technology and constantly hop between bands, so your request for traffic would head straight up, while whatever you ask for would be beamed back just as quickly. The network is so robust, Samsung estimates it could handle our demand for Internet traffic… in 2028.
Of course, there are a few roadblocks here, the most obvious being… who’s going to pay for it?
Orbital
Samsung isn’t going to be the only one shelling out for this; this is more a theoretical white paper than a proposal to actually launch some stuff into space. That’s a lot of satellites, and there are some complex issues at play here, not the least of which is that most world governments do not want their citizens to have unfettered access to information. But it’s nice to know an important aspect of this future Internet has been cracked.
