The OnePlus was a great budget smartphone (especially for travelers) with some solid marketing behind it. Fortunately, the almost-geniusly named OnePlus 2 exceeds the first model in almost every way.
The 2 is a 5.5-inch screened smartphone large enough to meet the new demand for phablet phones around the world. It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, Adreno 430 GPU, and 4GB of RAM. Those may not be top-of-the-line specs compared to flagship models from bigger brands (although 4GB of RAM is laudable), but they aren’t meant to be: The company is quick to assure us that its specs are enough for professional mobile computing, 3D gaming, and more. Also, the OnePlus 2 has an impressive 64GB of maximum storage and a sizable smartphone camera with extra low-light performance.
A few other stats: For data and charge, the phone uses a USB Type-C standard. The battery has a 3,300 mAh capacity. The frame is made from an aluminum/magnesium alloy with steel highlights and Gorilla glass. It’s a sleeker, darker build than the original model.
Perhaps more interesting is the company’s take on the Android platform, called OxygenOS. Through this operating system the OnePlus 2 provides welcome previous features like off-screen gestures and customizable buttons. You can choose custom icon packs and variety of formatting and shading options to create a far more personalized experience than the average OS. The OS also features native app-by-app security protection and protocols.
So, should you buy this next attempt from the Chinese manufacturer? When the phone ships later this year in Asia and then throughout the rest of the world, it will cost $330 to $390, one of the lowest price ranges on the market for these specs. This makes it the phone to beat…but there are competitors in the wings. If you aren’t sure quite yet, see what Axon and Moto bring to the table in the same price range first.
