Sling TV says Comcast’s NBC is blocking its ads

Comcast horror stories

Sling TV, the Dish Network-owned streaming service that lets you watch cable channels without a cable subscription, began advertising its offerings on broadcast stations earlier this month. But there’s a large audience that didn’t get the message.

In a blog post, Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch says that three TV stations in big markets blocked the ads: San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Those stations are all network-owned by NBC, and NBC is owned by Comcast.

In other words, Lynch says a cable company refused to run ads that would appeal to people who don’t have – or maybe wish they didn’t have – cable TV service.

Stations owned by other networks, ran the ads, Lynch said:

This action stands in contrast to the fact that our ads are currently running across ABC, CBS and Fox O&O stations and affiliates, as well as independently-owned NBC affiliates (emphasis on “independently-owned,” or in other words, not owned by Comcast).

Here’s the irony. The refusal to air our campaign endorses the ads’ central truth: there are traditional pay-TV players that just don’t get it.

Lynch also points out that his company was a vocal opponent to the proposed Comcast-Time Warner merger, which fell apart when federal regulators refused to approve it.

You can watch the Sling TV ad in question below.

This comes just after Comcast announced its own Internet-only streaming service, which won’t be widely available until early next year.

I’ve asked Comcast for a response to the Sling TV CEO’s allegations. I’ll update this blog post when I hear back.
