Yu Yuphoria Looks to be Launching May 12th According to Latest Teaser

Like the trailer leading up to a big blockbuster movie, smartphone manufacturers love to send out teasers highlighting specific parts of their upcoming phones. Yu’s upcoming flagship phone, the Yuphoria, was once called Project Caesar and was originally supposed to launch in April in India. While the phone seems to have missed that original release date by a little over a week Yu’s latest teaser for the phone clearly shows off the date of May 12th, 2015, telling readers to “Be Yuphoric.” The Yu Yuphoria’s name was derived from a crowdsourcing social campaign in which over 100,000 entries were put in for the name. This shows the kind of presence Yu has in India already, despite only having one phone on the market at the current time.

Like its previous phone the Yureka, Yu’s Yuphoria will be powered by Cyanogen OS out of the box. This time around though it’s launching with the Android Lollipop flavored Cyanogen OS 12, a recent release that’s hit devices like the Yu Yureka and OnePlus One. Much like OnePlus, Yu is actually a spin-off of a successful company, in this case India’s largest manufacturer Micromax is behind the Yu brand. Yu was designed to be sold to a different audience than most Micromax customers may be, citing users that love customization and powerful phones with the latest version of Android installed. Yu uses the successful online-only sales model that’s been adopted in countries like China and India and doesn’t sell its phones in retail stores, opting for users “lining up” virtually instead.

The Yu Yureka will be the first phone Yu ships with Android 5.0 on board, but remember that their first phone the Yureka has already received the update. Yu has been mocking Xiaomi lately saying that even its newest devices are still shipping with a year and a half old version of Android, Android 4.4 KitKat, instead of the one Google released 6 months ago. While Xiaomi has done a great job of catering its user experience to its user base there’s no denying that using an operating system that old when a newer one has been available for half a year is a little disconcerting. Regardless we’re going to see Yu’s presence in India grow without a doubt thanks to these phones, and the Cyanogen partnership looks to be a truly beautiful thing for them and their users.
