Report: Samsung Galaxy S6 Comes In Two Different Camera Sensor Variants

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the company’s newest flagship offerings. Both of these devices were announced during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona back in March. The Galaxy S6 flagships have also been available all around the world for quite some time now and many consumers have already received their ordered units. We knew the specs of the Galaxy S6 ever since the phone launched, and Sony’s IMX240 sensor was listed as the rear-facing unit here. Well, it seems like Sony’s sensor is not the only unit Samsung is using, read on.

This Korea-based smartphone OEM certainly isn’t a stranger when it comes to using different components in devices which carry the same name. Their previous offerings like the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy S5 were available in two different processor variants. Let’s take the Note 4 as an example, that phablet not only shipped in two different processor variants, but two camera sensor variants as well. The Snapdragon 805 model sported Sony’s IMX240 sensor, and the Exynos variant came with Samsung’s very own unit. Everyone thought that the Galaxy S6 sport only Sony’s 16-megapixel IMX240 sensor on the inside, but it seems like that’s not the case. Users are reporting different sensor strings, some from Sony some from Samsung. What’s even more interesting, it seems like there’s no pattern here, some carriers / countries seem to offer both variants.

This is very interesting, especially considering everyone thought Samsung used only Sony’s sensor in their Galaxy S6 handsets. This shouldn’t worry you though, both of those camera sensors seem to perform great considering the images that these smartphones have provided have been quite consistent thus far. It will be interesting to see if Samsung will release an official statement regarding all this or not, though we really doubt it. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge devices are powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core SoC and ship with 3GB of RAM and multiple storage variants. These two handsets are different in terms of design, but both sport a 5.1-inch QuadHD Super AMOLED display, 16-megapixel camera on the back and ship with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with the company’s TouchWiz UI on top of Google’s OS.
