Motorola Considering Manufacturing Android Smartphones in India

In recent weeks, we’ve heard reports of major smartphone manufacturers Sony and HTC both looking to focus more on the Indian market. Now, it’s Motorola’s turn, as they prepare to make a decision on whether or not to bring manufacturing of their Android smartphones to the country. Recently, it’s been said that Sony is considering something similar, and HTC is apparently looking to market Indian-exclusive devices in the country later this year. Now, the Economic Times of India has been speaking to Motorola, and it looks like the company responsible for the Moto E and Moto G could start to produce devices in the country.

Speaking to the Economic Times, Marcus Frost, Motorola’s Global Senior Marketing director for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific said that “we expect to soon take a call on the possibilities of India manufacturing, considering we are significantly growing sales in India and the smartphone market here holds enormous potential.” While Motorola currently only has 3% of the market in India, there’s definitely potential for Motorola to take the market by storm. While other firms like Xiaomi and even industry leader Micromax hold “flash sales” to sell limited stock in a short period of time, Frost said that Motorola would never do such a thing. “We will never go for the flash sales model on e-commerce, since we want our products to be always available for the consumers whenever they want it.” That’s a powerful strategy to take in today’s India, with online retailers like Flipkart taking off, it won’t be long before many in the country expect it to be as simple as logging on to order whatever they want. Flash sales might drum up hype, but consumers are more interested in a reliable product that’s always readily available.

The move to “Make in India” could become a reality for Motorola, and while Lenovo is of course the company’s new owner, Frost said that “Motorola is working independently making its own decisions” which is certainly reassuring for big fans of Motorola. The Narendra Modi government has been making a number of changes to modernise certain expects of life in India, especially where business is concerned. Modi wants India to be an easier place for business to produce and sell products, recently scrapping the 8 forms that entrepreneurs needed to incorporate a company in the country and replacing it with just 1, the INC-29. India is an emerging economy and while the smartphone market is currently slowing down in other parts of the world, it seems to be ever-growing in India, and Motorola have affordable products that are long-lasting. If there’s anyone to watch in the Indian market then it’s Motorola.
