Haier Targets Children And Senior Citizens With Specialized Features On Their Smartwatches

It seems like with each passing day, more and more consumer electronics manufacturers are jumping on to the smart wearables bandwagon. Samsung, LG, Sony, Apple were the old story. They’ve been at it with varying degrees of success for a while, but now, just about everybody who’s anybody seems to believe that it is the new frontier in consumer electronics and seems to be going out of their way, investing time, money and energy trying to come up with the next killer ‘must-have’ gadget. Only time will tell how much success anyone will have, but it sure makes for ‘interesting times’ as that famous Chinese proverb would say.

Over the years, Haier hasn’t really had a great time in their smartphone endeavor in spite of being the single largest consumer durables manufacturer on the planet. But now it seems like they are betting big on smart wearables, having shown off two different versions of their first ever smartwatch. Haier says that one of the variants is meant for children and the other, for senior citizens with specialized features to give their respective guardians and caregivers peace of mind. The watches come in an array of colors and comes with a microphone and speaker to facilitate phone calls. There is also a red SOS button that enables the user to send an alert to up to three different numbers in case of an emergency.

The Haier Smartwatches will come with 0.96” OLED displays and Haier claims that the battery will last two days under normal usage. The watches are also said to be waterproof up to a depth of 30 meters. The features on the children’s model and the senior citizens’ model are almost identical apart from the form factor, which is a bit more ‘grown-up’ on the senior version. Haier has also tweaked the name of the ‘baby monitor’ feature in the seniors’ version and instead, calls it “remote listening”.

One of the more interesting features of the device is its GPS tracker, which comes with an app of its own that concerned parents or caregivers can install on their phones. This allows the watch to serve as an e-tag which can then be used to monitor the location of the wearer. Through the app, parents or caregivers can earmark a ‘safe zone’, and any time the wearer crosses the boundaries of this pre-set area the device will send a warning to your phone letting you know the precise location of the person wearing the watch. The device is said to cost 99 Euros for the children’s version and 129 for the one aimed at senior citizens.
