ASUS ZenWatch Successor to Launch Next Year in a Version for Men and Women

ASUS ZenWatch-02

The ASUS ZenWatch was launched towards the end of last year at IFA 2014 in Berlin and it quickly became known as one of the classier square smartwatches on the market, proving that you didn’t need to be round in order to be a good-looking smartwatch. Since then, we’ve seen the company launch the VivoWatch and continue to hear rumors of the second-generation ZenWatch. ASUS’ CEO Jerry Shen had said in the past that a version of the ZenWatch with a SIM card slot would launch towards the end of 2015, but now NDTV has learned that this isn’t the case, and that we might have to wait until next year to see a new version of ASUS’ Android Wear smartwatch hit shelves.

NDTV apparently got some time with Jerry Shen himself and have learned that the next ZenWatch will be available in a version for men and a version for women. Whether or not this means that ASUS will simpy ship different colors of the device, or different designs is unknown at this point, but it wouldn’t surprise us if ASUS shipped the ZenWatch 2 in different sizes. The current crop of Android Wear smartwatches are definitely on the larger side, and there’s a clear market for something smaller for women. Shen also outlined a focus on improving battery life, something that he’s mentioned a need to improve before. Right now, Android Wear devices like the ZenWatch as well as the G Watch R all use processors designed for smartphones, so newer chips should be designed for lower-power situations like a wearable device such as a smartwatch.

ASUS is no stranger to the Android world, starting out with the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer back in the day, but the wearables market was something of a mystery to them. After testing the waters with the original ZenWatch, ASUS are said to have a better understanding of the market, and the ZenWatch 2 will presumably be a product that ASUS is more willing to spend time and money promoting. If the ZenWatch 2 is to launch next year, it looks like we have quite the wait ahead of us.
