Thanks to the WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Community) summit in China on March 17th, we now have some new details about Windows 10 and its availability.
First, we know that Windows 10 will be available this summer, not only in the United States but in 190 countries right off the bat, with compatibility in 111 different languages. No phased out deployment for this version of Windows, it seems – international right from the start.
It’s worth noting that the announcement did take place in China and included several points about how compatible with Chinese users Windows 10 would be, with Cortana able to speak fluently in Mandarin and partnerships with companies like Lenovo, Tencent and QiHu 360. Lenovo in particular will be deeply involved and should be releasing its own Windows phones in mid-2015 for the Chinese Market using Chinese Mobile as a provider. Tencent, meanwhile, is going to be mostly an software provider with its popular utility and gaming apps that will be available on Windows 10 in all their glory.
Along the way, the presentation reiterated that Windows 10 would be a free upgrade for compatible Windows devices around the world, which would be machines running Windows 7 or later. Several new Windows 10 features were also touched on, including the “Windows Hello” feature that offers biometric authentication and a free download of Windows especially designed for developers so they can work to create their own devices, especially Internet of Things devices that are compatible with Windows.
The goal of this Chinese focus is likely twofold: First, Microsoft is probably trying to put the clamp on Chinese knockoffs and pirating, a traditional problem that costs U.S. companies a lot of money in Asian markets. Second, Microsoft is trying to dig further into China and win more market loyalty ahead of its competitors, which have had mixed success in the largest emerging market in the world.
