T-Mobile Announces Data Stash for Prepaid Plans

Back before Christmas, T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere announced Data Stash. Which allows you to rollover your unused data to be used the next month or even 3 months from now (it expires in 12 months). T-Mobile also gave out 10GB of free data to everyone on a postpaid plan of 3GB of higher. I actually haven’t even touched my 10GB of data, thanks to the Music Freedom. Today, T-Mobile is expanding Data Stash, and bringing it to their prepaid users. T-Mobile is the king of Prepaid right now, so this move shouldn’t be a surprise.

Starting on March 22nd, those on a Simple Choice prepaid plan will be getting Data Stash when their billing cycle renews. Additionally, everyone of T-Mobile’s customers on a Simple Choice plan for prepaid will get 10GB of 4G LTE data as well. Once that’s used up, their unused data will start to rollover from month to month, for free. Pretty awesome right?

While AT&T pioneered the “rolling over” with their rollover plans back around 2008 with their minutes. AT&T also followed T-Mobile’s lead with data. However, AT&T’s data rollover only rolls over for 30 days. So if you don’t use that unused data next month, it’s gone. T-Mobile states in their press release today, that just last year wireless customers asked their carrier to roll over their data a whooping 40,000 times. And that was just on Twitter. Imagine how many times it’s been said on Facebook, Google+ and other forums.

Now prepaid T-Mobile customers are getting Data Stash too. That’s pretty awesome. Almost makes you think, why would anyone go postpaid? Well the only two reasons I can think of is the unlimited global roaming, and the ability to buy a phone, and work towards paying it off each month. If you can’t afford to buy it in its entirety when you need a new phone. Now it’s going to be interesting to see what the prepaid competitors do here. Like Cricket, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and the others. Do you think they’ll follow T-Mobile or just ignore them like Verizon has chosen to do? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
