Samsung Officially Announces the Galaxy S6 Edge at Mobile World Congress 2015

Galaxy S6 Event AH57

For a long, long time now we’ve been hearing about the Galaxy S6 Edge, a variant of the Galaxy S6 with two curved edges, just like the Galaxy Note Edge from last Fall. Well, just as we expected, the Galaxy S6 Edge is most definitely a thing, and it’s most definitely very similar to the Galaxy S6 itself. Just like the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 Edge is developed from metal and Gorilla Glass 4, and it’s no wonder why Samsung has said it’s taken them years to design this fresh design; it sure looks pretty special.

The same 5.1-inch Quad HD display with 577ppi is here, complete with Super AMOLED technology, this time around though it’s wrapped around the whole front panel, which curves around the left and right-hand sides. Just like the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 Edge is super-thin and it features wireless charging out of the box, supporting both the WPC and P4A wireless charging standards, which is basically the sort of charging using in Starbucks. This battery can be charged for just 10 minutes to get 4 hours of battery life, which is really quite impressive. As a result though, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge feature built-in batteries, rather than the hose that used to be removable in the past.

The Galaxy S6 Edge features a few extra goodies, like a UI that curves and spills out over the both the left and right-hand sides of the display. It’s built using the same metal construction and Gorilla Glass 4 as the Galaxy S6 and shares much of the DNA of the Galaxy S6, including the same specs. However, there’s a slightly larger battery here at 2,600 mAh vs 2,550 mAh. It’s an interesting product overall, but it doesn’t look like Samsung has taken the Dual Edge display as far as they could have here, and I’m intrigued to see just what Samsung have done with it. We’ll have hands-on with the Galaxy S6 Edge soon, and if we find anything else, we’ll be sure to let you know what’s different.
