Qualcomm and MediaTek to Face even more Competition in China

This past year, MediaTek really started to show us why they should be competing with Qualcomm. For example, the 64-bit Helio X10 processor that was rebranded at Mobile World Congress earlier this month, is right on par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor. MediaTek also has some pretty big plans for 2015. However, it looks like they won’t be the only ones challenging Qualcomm in China this year. According to Digitimes, there are 3-4 processor manufacturers in China that are going to be a heated fight very soon.

According to this report, 2 of these contenders, MediaTek and Spreadtrum Communications, are going to be showing off their newest chips at events in Shenzhen at the end of March and April, respectively. MediaTek is going to introduce new Helio brand chipset solutions for mid-range smartphones as well as high-end 4G LTE smartphones. The aim here is to ramp up its market share in China with chips having better specs and better price/performance ratios. Typically you’d find MediaTek processors in most smartphones over in China, and a few here in the US (most of those are unlocked ones).

Meanwhile, Spreadtrum who has been restructuring over the past year and has financial support from the Chinese government, will be looking for a comeback in 2015. And will be unveiling their latest 3G and 4G SoC’s at their event. According to Digitimes sources.

On top of those two, Qualcomm and Intel have been entering China lately, looking to make the race very interesting. Intel has been absent from mobile for quite a while, but it appears that now they want to get in on the fun. At Mobile World Congress they introduced the X3, X5, and X7 mobile processors. So we should see them doing more in mobile over the next year or so.

As most of you know, China is the largest smartphone market around. And China also houses a ton of smartphone manufacturers like Huawei, Meizu, Xiaomi, Gionee, and many others. So to have a race like this between SoC vendors, is going to be really interesting, as all four could make it in China since there’s plenty of space.
