Google recently made Android Auto available to everyone. Last week they published the Android Auto app into the Play Store, and Pioneer started shipping their head units that have Android Auto. Now Google has launched a compatibility website to see if your phone is compatible with Android Auto. Google did the same thing with Android Wear, which needs Android 4.4 or higher to work. It’s a pretty simple website and compatibility check, that’s ultimately broken.
While having the compatibility website is great, it appears to be broken right now. Android Central first noticed this, that all Lollipop devices they tried using the compatibility check website on, were showing their device is not compatible, even though they’ve been using those devices with Android Auto. A bit strange right? We checked on the Moto E 2015, and the Nexus 6 (only Lollipop devices in my possession) and had the same issue. Google says my Nexus 6 running on Android 5.1 is not compatible with Android Auto. Even though I’ve had a demo with the Nexus 6 back at the North American International Auto show. So for now, we’re going to advise everyone to take this website with a grain of salt until Google fixes it.
We do know that Android Auto won’t be available in all countries, but we do know it’ll be available in the US, in fact it already is. Basically, if you have a smartphone that runs on Android 5.0 or higher, then your smartphone should be compatible with Android Auto.
Android Auto is a pretty neat product from Google and many car makers. Basically it’s a 7-inch screen that’s built into your dashboard and you can control your smartphone from that screen. The best analogy I’ve seen about Android Auto is that it’s basically like plugging your laptop into an external monitor. That’s basically what you’re doing with your smartphone and car for Android Auto. It also makes it much safer to use navigation, change music and even take calls from your car.
