It’s probably safe to say that most of you reading this are using Chrome, whether that’s on a desktop or mobile device. Chrome is the most popular web browser in the world. Although we all have some issues with it, it’s still a great web browser. Chrome for Android is about to get a pretty cool feature, and it’s actually nothing that we haven’t seen before. Basically Chrome is looking to add a popup banner at the bottom of some sites that will allow you to add it to your home screen. Basically making the website an app for you. iOS has actually been doing this for quite a while with Safari.
The feature is actually available in Chrome 42 right now, which is still in beta. Google does have a plan to keep the feature from being spammy, and popping up on every website. The user will have to visit the site at least twice on two separate days, over the course of two weeks for the banner to trigger. Which sounds like a good idea. I don’t think many people will want to add a site to their home screen that they don’t visit often. You can also clear the popup, and it won’t appear again until you clear your history. However, you can still access it through the menu in Chrome.
Google has already implemented another feature similar to this. Where if you visit a website that has an app, there will be a banner at the top of the screen asking you if you want to install the app. It’s a good way to drive more downloads, but also more traffic into the Play Store for Google. And better yet, possibly a better experience for users, as apps are usually better optimized than a mobile-optimized website.
How many of you would love to use this feature in Chrome for Android? Or would you just rather your favorite sites to have their own Android app? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
