Cyanogen and BLU to release Google-less phone later this year

Amongst the hoopla of Cyanogen’s announcement that they had secured $80 million in new financing to help fund development of its operating system, we are discovering that Cyanogen is partnering with BLU to produce a smartphone that does not use any Google services or apps. Connections between BLU and Cyanogen have been noted in the past when Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster has talked about toppling Samsung and Apple in the smartphone market.

According to BLU’s CEO, the company has already identified several apps and services that could service as replacements for popular Google solutions. These include apps like the Amazon app store, the Opera web browser, Nokia Here, Dropbox, OneDrive, Spotify, Bing, and even Cortana.

It is not clear why Cyanogen appears to be so intent on dumping Google from their ecosystem. It is also not apparent that this is a strategy that will ultimately be successful for Cyanogen. Do you think Cyanogen and BLU can generate sufficient interest in a smartphone that is free of Google apps and services?
