Android How To: Enable Developer Mode for Android Auto

This week, Google pushed out the Android Auto app into the Play Store. They also made it available to manufacturers to start shipping. Pioneer is the first one to begin shipping their third-party head units, while car makers like Hyundai will be updating many of their 2013 and later models for Android Auto in the coming weeks. Currently there’s not a whole lot we can do with the Android Auto app as we don’t have a car that supports it. However, you can enable developer mode. For those that want to tinker with things.

To enable developer mode, simply open the app. Now tap on the picture at the top that shows the Play Music icon, Google’s Search icon and a few others, about 7 times. It’ll now say you’re a developer. Tap on the action overflow in the top right corner. You’ll see Developer Settings there now. As well as Quit Developer Mode.

Inside Developer options you’ll see lots of cool features. The interesting tone is Application Mode. Where you can have it set in Release, Developer or Demo. You can also take screenshots and share them straight from the settings. and a lot of other cool stuff.

While I’m not exactly sure why most people would want to use developer options on Android Auto, it is here for those that want it. Android Auto is available now, and there are a slew of apps that do support it. Including WhatsApp, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, iHeart Radio, Spotify and many others. With more coming over the next few weeks and months.

For those that don’t know what Android Auto is, it’s basically an infotainment system running off of your phone. So no matter what Android device you have or what car you have, you’ll get the same experience. You simply plug your phone into your car and your phone is now running it’s infotainment system. Most car makers and third-party head units are going to have a 7-inch display. Which also shows you Google Now-style cards for music that’s playing as well as navigation and more. With Android Auto you can choose between a slew of music apps, as well navigate to where you’re going and even make and receive calls.
