The Proscan Claims To Be Able To Scan Your Food

Not unreasonably, most of us want to know, as much as possible, what we’re putting in our bodies. However, doing so with any precision is beyond the capabilities of most of us. Which is where, in theory, the Proscan comes into play.

Scan This

The Proscam claims that all you need to do is set your food on the item, press a button, and it’ll use a mixture of load cells and proprietary sensors to tell you what the food is, what’s inside it, and how much of it you should eat. It sounds great, of course, but the skeptic in me finds myself with a few questions he wants answers to.

Scanning…

To start with, great, it has a load cell. But what other sensors is it using. The ProScan team rather boldly claims it comes with a spectrometer and “proprietary sensors” that will tell you exactly what’s in your food. It reads the “molecular footprint,” or so they say.

But, first of all, that’s fairly advanced technology you can buy for $100. Secondly, there’s enough variation between different types of food that it seems like it would be, at best, a rough prediction. Similarly, it doesn’t seem like there’s a finished product yet, just a few mock-ups.

In other words, it’s either a breakthrough or a total load. But you can make the call yourself; it’s currently going to $99 on an IndieGogo page.
