Samsung has showcased four new devices at their IFA press event back in September. The Galaxy Note 4 phablet definitely took the spotlight at the event, as basically everyone knew it was going to launch and have been waiting for it. This Korean tech giant has also showcased their Gear S Tizen-based smartwatch which was announced a few days before the event itself, and a Gear VR headset which works in collaboration with the Note 4, a gadget which nobody expected Samsung to launch. That being said, this Korean company has also launched the Galaxy Note Edge at that event, a handset which was completely unexpected as well.
This is one of those “test” devices Samsung likes to release from time to time, like the first Galaxy Note was, and look at where it is now, one of the most recognized smartphone brands in the world. The Galaxy Note Edge sports that curved Edge display on the right side which gives it an extra layer of functionality, as it acts as a separate panel from the main screen, but it adapts as you open up stuff on the main screen. This thing also offers all of Galaxy Note 4’s tricks, including the S Pen stylus. Well, It seems like the Note Edge “experiment” is doing better than expected for Samsung, at least according to the South Korean publication Dt. They say that Samsung has already sold 630,000 Galaxy Note Edge units, which is nothing compared to the Galaxy Note 4’s 4.5 million shipments, but keeping in mind the Note Edge is a new unfamiliar brand, these are great news for the company. The Note Edge’s availability is also limited, especially compared to the Galaxy Note 4’s market placement.
I’m sure that Samsung is more than happy with these numbers and can consider the Galaxy Note Edge to be a success, at least thus far. The company is getting ready to announce the Galaxy S6 at their press event on March 1st, and it is possible that the Galaxy S6 will also get a curved spin-off device, the rumored Galaxy S(6) Edge.
