Flip phones, a design that puts the screen and keypad inside the chassis when closed up but makes them accessible when the device is in the open position, are one of the classic handset designs. They offer a couple of advantages compared to the “candy bar” design of a single lump of cellphone, although in the smartphone arena the candy bar design has usually been flattened off! The sensitive and vulnerable main display is kept protected when the flip ‘phone is in the closed position but of course this means that people cannot see who is calling them, or other notifications and so manufacturers often include a secondary display on the outside of the screen, used for caller ID, battery status and similar. Flip phones and Android have not tended to be used together away from Asia, presumably because of customer tastes, but because they still sell in some parts of the world we still see me manufacturers releasing flip Android smartphones, such as the Sharp Aquos K Flip, which I’m writing about today.
The Sharp Aquos K Flip is a new lower end device based around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which is in the usual quad core, 1.2GHz configuration. It’s supported by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which in turn may be expanded with a MicroSD card. The main screen is only 3.4-inch across the diagonal and has a resolution of 540 by 960 pixels. It’s kept alive by a 1,400mAh battery, which is small in the context of modern flagship devices but then so too is a 3.4-inch display. It seems that Sharp have given the Aquos K Flip something of a photography bias as there’s a 13MP primary camera on the back. The device will also support LTE networks.
The Aquos K Flip is destined for Japan in the first instance. It’s not clear if the device will be sold in other regions around the world, the price of likely release date. It’s also not clear the version of Android used, other than it doesn’t appear Sharp have used a near-stock version as they have managed with the Aquos Crystal range of handsets.
