Microsoft Brings New OneDrive API To The Foreground To Make App Integration Easier For Developers

Cloud storage is easily one of the most used services that can be found on multiple platforms simply because of what it allows the user. Not all cloud services are alike, although many of them do offer a good number of similar features and most of them are available via desktop, iOS and Android as well as windows phones. That of course includes OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage service formally known as SkyDrive before the company’s current CEO Satya Nadella took over, and the good news for developers as well as OneDrive users is that Microsoft is releasing a new API for OneDrive to enhance a couple of things.

If you’re a developer and you want to incorporate OneDrive into your app for easy sharing to the cloud, the new API will allow for a simpler process of integrating OneDrive into your app to help streamline this process. Since cloud based storage accounts can store anything from links, to text, to videos, photos, music and more, plenty of developers could take advantage of this. This API isn’t just limited to just Android as Microsoft states it supports all major platforms, which includes iOS, Android, Windows, and the web platform for web based apps.

A handful of different apps are already getting support to get the new OneDrive API incorporated, which includes popular apps like IFTTT, the app used by many to automate certain various tasks. Microsoft wants to evolve OneDrive as much as possible and they want to make it open and accessible to as many developers and platforms as possible, which is just one more showing of Microsoft’s continued desire to evolve as a company themselves and become more open to cross-platform usability. Microsoft states that the new API provides better speed and functionality, and it includes various new features like resumable uploads of files up to 10GB via the file-fragment uploading for working with rich content, and customizable thumbnail images, which they state is aimed at making it simpler for developers to provide a “more integrated” experience across their application, which in the long run benefits the end user as well. If you’re ready to get started with the new API you can visit the Microsoft OneDrive blog where a link to the Github can be found.
