Light Therapy Earbuds Make Your Ears Glow, May Help You Sleep

Light therapy is controversial in some respects, but as we learn more about seasonal affective disorder, circadian rhythms, and how we sleep, it seems that the light we’re exposed to is a rather important part of keeping yourself healthy. That said, I am mildly skeptical of Hammacher Schlemmer’s fancy new earbuds, that shine a light. Up your ears.

No, Seriously

The theory at work here is that while we need exposure to light, it’s not receiving the light through the eyes that gives you the benefits. Instead, or at least the theory goes, you need to shine a light where the skull is thinnest, and as you may have guessed, that’s through your ears.

To that end, these earbuds put LEDs on the ends and shine a light down your ears. Sorry, they don’t play music. Instead they draw energy off a small, iPod sized battery pack. The claim is that if you spend twelve minutes a day with lights in your ears, you will feel more energized, less down, and generally ready to face the winter. Or, at least, you’ll have a seat to yourself on the train, since you’re the guy plugging LEDs into his ears.

If these particular claims sound just a little… well, unusual, the science is a bit uncertain. Studies are still being done about shoving lights in your ears, but it is worth noting that this is essentially harmless to your person. Not to your wallet, though; these run $300 a pop.
