Remember that article I wrote shortly after Apple announced new and bigger iPhones? I asked if there was a compelling reason to buy an Android phone now that the iPhone 6 sports a larger display? To me there is still a compelling reason, but I’m not the mainstream. The people have spoken. All those iPhone faithful who said size doesn’t matter apparently lied right to our faces. Apple has enjoyed considerable success since upgrading screen sizes and the numbers prove it.
According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Apple’s iOS overtook Android for the first time since 2012. Now we aren’t talking a major lead here, only 0.1%, but this move is significant. These stats come from the 4th quarter 2014 in which iOS enjoyed 47.7% of sales against Android’s 47.6%. The previous year (2013) was a lot different as Android dominated with 50.7% vs iOS at 43.9%.
Is this a new trend? Now that size is on equal footing for both Android and iOS, it’s going to come down to innovation. Apple sure is enjoying some really nice sales, but as my Father always said, “What are they going to do for an encore?” Apple has already used the “display size” card, so what’s next?
