Back at IFA in September, Android Wear was definitely high on the agenda. Manufacturers like Samsung and LG were keen to show off their latest smartwatch offerings and there was a whole host of other Wear related announcements from other manufacturers. Not to mention, Motorola stole the show by releasing the Moto 360. One of the companies who did not show off a Wear offering but did make an announcement at IFA was Huawei. They stated that they would be releasing a smartwatch although it will not land until 2015.
Since then and with MWC literally just around the corner, speculation has started to mount that Huawei was indeed gearing up to release a smartwatch at this weekend’s event. The rumors mounted even more last week (and again today) when a new teaser was sent out by the company suggesting some sort of curved device was about to be released. Many speculated that this supposed curve teaser was indeed a smartwatch. Especially as it came with the tag “Next is here”. Well, it seems all speculation can now come to a close on this one. As we speak, many media sites (including us) are en route to Barcelona for this weekend’s event. The folks over at Android Central were passing through Barcelona airport and noticed a very interesting advert on display.
As you can see from the image, Huawei are indeed gearing up to release their own smartwatch. It will be a round watch and does seem to be aimed more towards the sophisticated market, similar to the recently announced LG G Watch Urbane. The advert suggests the watch will be available with three different band types (leather, mesh and sports). It is a little strange that the image is on show before the announcement has taken place, but there you go. The advert comes with the tagline “Timeless Design. Smart Within” which should give some indication to the type of smartwatch it will be. Huawei’s event will be held on Sunday March 1st and it is presumed we will hear more about their new smartwatch then. In the meantime, what do you think? Contender?
