HTC Might Launch The Company’s “Petra” Smartwatch At MWC After All

HTC Logo

HTC’s Android Wear smartwatch has been rumored for quite some time now, many people expected it to launch at CES (Consumers Electronics Show) in Las Vegas last month, but that hasn’t happened. HTC was rather quiet regarding all of this and we haven’t seen many rumors or leaks regarding this smartwatch since then. One rumor did go through though, and it mentioned the HTC Petra smartwatch, which is possibly the codename for HTC’s product. HTC was rather talkative in the past regarding this smartwatch, and this year they’re really quiet for some reason, this might actually indicate that the smartwatch will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month.

We don’t have much information about the specifications of this smartwatch at the moment, but @upleaks did leak this smartwatch’s alleged specifications. According to the leaker, the device will feature a 1.8-inch 320 x 160 POLED display. It was also said that the device will be available in three sizes (S/M/L) and 4 color options. IP57 certification for water and dust resistance was also mentioned, along with the weight of this smartwatch (23 grams). ST Micro STM32L151 chip will reportedly power on this device and a three-day battery life is also in the mix, along with the POGO pin charging.

According to the latest report from Pocket-lint, the smartwatch might actually be announced at MWC next month. At least Pocket-lint’s sources think that’s the case, and the smartwatch might debut as part of HTC’s partnership with Under Armour. If that ends up being the case here, this smartwatch will have a ton of fitness functions built in. The design of this smartwatch is also a mystery, HTC’s latest flagship devices have been made out of metal, but who knows what will this smartwatch look like. If fitness ends up being its main orientation, I doubt metal will be the material of choice.

Will this be an Android Wear-powered smartwatch? Well, it might not be. The latest available leaks have been claiming that HTC petra is going to run a proprietary OS called RTOS, which would give HTC complete control over the content within the OS and the operating system itself. It is also said that the smartwatch will work with Android, as well as iOS devices. How much will it cost? Well, that part is unknown at this point as well, but it might be priced between $250 and $300.
