European HTC One M7 Devices Receiving Android 5.0.2 Update

Twitter user @LlabTooFeR has Tweeted that HTC have released an update for European HTC One M7 devices, which brings the version of Android up to 5.0.2 Lollipop and HTC ROM version 7.19.401.2 with a reported size over and above 800 MB. This update brings the M7 from Android 5.0.1 to Android 5.0.2, which in numbers is a relatively small update. Under the skin, most of these changes are bug fixes: there’s no major change and the HTC Sense interface is effectively unchanged. With a longer term perspective, the One M7 is now approaching two years old and was originally launched running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in early 2013. It’s based around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor with 2 GB of memory and a 4.7-inch, 1080p screen; it’s more than capable of smoothly running Android Lollipop and the Sense interface.

In the details, the update to 5.0.2 changes how Android deals with internal alarms and improves how the processor is woken for an alarm. Google also fixed a bug that occured when simultaneous alarms competed for system resources and made a change to how the TRIM process was run. TRIM is a process whereby the device cleans up the internal storage (essentially, it’s garbage collection), which in version 5.0.1 ran overnight with the device on charge. However, that meant that if customers turned off their devices overnight or did not keep their device on charge, TRIM would not run and this would eventually cause performance issues. Android 5.0.2 will now run the TRIM process more often to cover those people who don’t have their device charging up overnight. There’s no fix for the memory leak issue; we’ll have to wait for the next update for this.

Perhaps more to the point is this latest update dispels the rumor that after receiving Android 5.0.1, HTC would not be providing further updates for the M7. We don’t know if the device will receive the next somewhat more major update, expected to be Android 5.1 Lollipop, but it’s encouraging to see a manufacturer keeping devices up to date and incorporating bug fixes.

Do you use the HTC One M7? If you do and you’re in Europe, have you received the update yet? If so, let us know how you get along in the comments below.
