The Android Platform version numbers are in for the chart that gathered information running for a seven day period through today, February 2nd, and among the shifting percentages we see Android 5.0 Lollipop make its way onto the chart for the first time, as the software was released alongside the launch of the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 tablets, making up for a total of about 1.6% of all Android devices currently in circulation at this point in time. Since a number of OEM’s are slated for roll outs of the Android 5.0 Lollipop software this month, like Sony for example, we’ll likely be seeing those numbers jump up the next time this chart releases which would be within the first week of March.
While Android 5.0 Lollipop has finally made it on the chart at 1.6% of users, KitKat is closing the gap between it and Android Jelly Bean as the largest percentage of Android version software being used on devices. Between all three versions of Jelly Bean, which includes Android 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3, there are still 44.5% of users on Android devices that are still running that version of the OS. KitKat comes in at a close second though as 39.7% of users are now on Android 4.4. Ice Cream Sandwich now makes up 6.4% of users on the Android OS, while Gingerbread is still being used by 7.4% of users, and Froyo is still being used by a mere 0.4% of users on the Android platform.
Another section of the charts shows what display sizes as well as resolutions are being used the most, and it appears that most people are using devices with a normal size display, making up more than 80% of all Android devices used,(81.8% in all)while large and extra large devices make up 9% and 4.4% of all Android devices respectively. When it comes to screen resolution, hdpi devices make up the largest portion of Android devices being used which comes to a number of 39.2%, while xhdpi devices comes in second with 20.0%. Devices with a resolution of mdpi and xxhdpi comes in at 17.3% and 15.9% of devices being used respectively, and ldpi makes up the smallest portion of devices being used with that particular resolution at 5.3%. It’ll be interesting to see these numbers change throughout 2015 as phones with larger and larger displays seem to be getting more popular.
