Several smartphone / tablet manufacturers specialize in manufacturing rugged devices, manufacturers like RuggON. This is a Taiwan-based company and they just announced the Rextorm series of Rugged tablets. In case rugged gadgets are your thing, you should definitely read on. The company has announced three new tablets as part of this series, the PX-501, PM-521 and the PA-501. Considering the first two are Windows tablets, we’ll focus on the latter one, which is an Android-powered gadget. Anyhow, let’s see what it has to offers, shall we.
The RuggON PA-501 tablet features a 10.1-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) TFT LCD ((ultra bright 1000 Nit optically bonded) display along with 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB via microSD card) This thing is powered by Ti OMAP 4470 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and it comes with Android 4.2 JellyBean pre-installed. 5-megapixel camera is located on the back of this thing and it is flanked by an LED flash, while a 1.2-megapixel snapper is available up front. 4,540mAh battery (10.8V) ships with this tablet, while a 2,500mAh (3.7V) backup up battery pack is built-in as well as far as I can tell from the spec sheet. The extended pack will be announced in the future according to RuggON, the extended pack will be 9,080mAh (10.8V). This thing measures 280 x 195 x 23mm and it weighs 0.99kg. Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS come as part of the package along with 3G connectivity, 4G version will also be available. The tablet also ignores unintended touches, as the palm of your hand and water mist / rain drops. The display also supports glove touch detection, so that workers don’t have a problem using this thing. The 2mm hard tip stylus also ships with this device by the way.
Now for the interesting part, and the part that interests you most probably. This tablet comes with IP65 certification, MIL-STD-810G, which means you can drop it from 5 feet height and it should be just fine. The tablet itself looks really rugged as well, just take a look at it, it’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it’s not meant to me. This tablet will find its consumer base without a problem I believe, it might find its use on a construction site, or a similar environment. RuggON definitely won’t break any records as far as sales go, but these types of products always found buyers, one way or another.
