Rolling Stone And Google Teaming Up To Bring Free Content To Play Newsstand

Here’s a treat for music lovers. Rolling Stone is going to be bringing some of its old issues to the Google Play Newsstand app, and some of the content will be totally free. Several major stories from each issue will be available to read for free. Google is trying to build awareness of the Google Play Newsstand app and feels that partnering with Rolling Stone will drive users to the app. We think they’re right. Gus Wenner, the son of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, thinks that there is a lot of interest in archived stories, too. “You’re walking down a ledger of pop culture,” he says, from John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1968 to Kid Rock and a bevy of bikini-clad women in 2007. “It’s powerful.”

Brian Irving, the head of Google Play’s global marketing, says that this new partnering with Rolling Stone is a way to show off Google Play Newsstand’s capabilities. He compares Google Play Newsstand to Apple’s Newsstand app and says that Google’s offering is better for discovering new content because it offers features and customization that Apple doesn’t. At first, Google Play Newsstand will have “three or four” articles from each issue for free in the app as well as on the Rolling Stone website. This isn’t just a play by Google to increase traffic to their app. Rolling Stone also wants to drive traffic to their website, which is on pace to hit 24 million unique visitors this month. The more traffic, the better. This move should work out well for both of the parties involved.

The Google Play Newsstand app is already a great way to get your news and read magazines. If you don’t have it, hit the source link below and grab it. Rolling Stone’s Wenner says that it’s just a matter of promoting things in a better way. “I see it every day in our analytics: Archival content performs very well. It comes down to how you promote and when,” he says. “We’ll be smart about how we promote it, and we’ll tie it to news events. It’s not hard to find these moments.”
