Hola Barcelona! We can never stress enough that Barcelona is our favourite European city (so far). Hence, we were so delighted to find out that Mercat Barcelona Gastrobar that specializes in Catalan cuisine has opened it’s door in Bangsar last month.

Head by expat chef David Caral, a Barcelona native with short stints in El Cerdo and Circus, as well as manager Jorge Fernandez from Spain; they take pride In Catalan cooking and hope to introduce this unique cuisine to Malaysians. We had fun chatting with Jorge and we kept showing him some of the best meals that we have had in Barcelona. He knows most of the places that we went to and he will also slowly introduce more dishes into their menu.

Estrella Galicia

Mercat Barcelona is running without a liquor license; so they encourage BYOB for now. We had the Estrella Galicia, the most famous beer from Galicia, in Spain. It was pleasant, refreshing, with spicy tones that stand out.

Tabla de Embutidos/Artisanal Meat Plate RM 59

For ony RM 59, our platter came in a generous portion that consists of Jamon Iberico, Jamon Serrano, Lomo Iberico,Chorizo Iberico and Fuet served with olives and reganas bread. We loved the well-balanced fat to meat ratio, excellent taste and low salt content. The cured meat served is of good quality. Even the marinated Spanish olives, was plump and juicy, with some mild herbs and spices taste.

Gambas al Ajillo/Garlic Prawn (RM29)

The Spanish-style garlic prawns were done perfectly. The shrimps were juicy and tender with a crunchy pop, when the oil had this wonderful garlic and chilli aroma. We can’t help but to keep dipping our bread onto the oil.

Calamares a la Plancha (RM 25)

The grilled squid with garlic and parsley sauce was another beautiful dish. I don’t always eat squids, but when I do, I like them tender, and this dish delivers it in spades. It was also slightly charred and with smoky notes lent from the grilling. Delicious!

Everyone raves about how amazing the paella was! However we were too full by then. Mercat Barcelona’s paella is meant for sharing, between 2 to 3 pax and a minimum waiting time of 20 minutes is required. This gives us great excuse to revisit! Anyone? We need a bigger party to try more stuff!
