Smart locks get quite a few things right – the ability to wireless lock and unlock the door or check on security is undeniably handy. However, many of the smart locks on the market rely on dongles, awkward designs, unnecessary features, and other market-blind choices. Not so with the newly announced Lockitron Bolt.
You may recognize Lockitron as a successful Kickstarter project from a couple years ago. The team is back and has refined their idea into the Bolt, a smart lock designed for a broad audience, and it looks exactly like what a smart lock should be.
First: On the surface it’s an ordinary deadbolt. There’s no sensitive cameras or screen to be damaged, and it would seem at home on any door. From a production standpoint it also appears to be very easy to manufacture, which is one reason the cost of the Lockitron Bolt has also fallen to only $99, one of the lowest price tags in the smart lock market.
Bolt uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone, letting you unlock the door by opening the app when you are close by. You can also choose to add a $49 WiFi adapter which allows you to remotely open the door from anywhere at anytime, ideal for letting a friend or family member inside and then making sure the door is locked when they leave. The set-up also allows you to give specific permissions to different people who access the door regularly.
At the moment, the plan is first ship a beta version of Bolt in March and then eventually release the final product after some final improvements. If you are interested in the preview version and want to preorder, take a visit to the Lockitron web page.
