If there’s one control scheme that has a surprising amount of nostalgia around it, it’s the dial. People love dials; they may never use them anymore, but that’s only because the button is easier to program for in the digital age. But, some people miss the dial so much, they’re bringing it back… but, if you forgive the pun, with a twist.
Dialing In
The Spin Remote is, essentially, a floating dial. You teach it the various functions of your remote, a simple task since it both sends out infrared commands in every direction and is also an IR receiver. Your remote may be dumb, but it can still teach your Spin.
Using the obligatory app to manage the overall results, you can teach the Spin to do a variety of functions depending on what you need and what you want. No matter what, though, the basic concept is the same; pick up that dial and rotate it.
Aren’t You Glad You Have Dials?
If that weren’t enough, it’s full of sensors. That allows you to lock in various presets, such as having the Spin work differently when it’s on a table than when you’re holding it. And, of course, it comes with Bluetooth so you can pair it to your phone and tweak any presets you’ve designed to your liking.
It’s a fascinating concept, not least due to how it simplifies the sometimes complex remote control. This doesn’t appear to be a complete remote replacement; you’ll still have to contend with more advanced functions using the Enterprise console that came with your TV. But at least for the simpler stuff, there’s a more elegant solution.
