You can say what you want about Samsung, but they are certainly not afraid, or maybe simply too naive, to try new things…they are like the Google of smartphone manufacturers. Samsung wants to have their hand in everything – too much so for many of us – and this can cause unwanted bloatware of unused services stuck on our devices taking up precious resources. ChatOn, WatchOn, Milk Music, Milk Video, etc., come to mind. ChatOn, their own messaging service – because we don’t already have enough – was being rumored to be shutting down last month, but Samsung came out with a statement refuting that rumor by saying, “the recent rumors concerning ChatOn have been false, as ChatOn will continue to be offered to consumers worldwide”. They are also claiming a 100 million users worldwide – I used the Galaxy Note 2 and now the Galaxy Note 3 and have never even tried ChatOn – but apparently 100 million people do use it.
The latest rumor is involving their WatchOn – Samsung’s proprietary app that allows users to use their smartphone as a remote control for their TV…also offering recommendations, the ability to search and even pull-up on-demand shows from other suppliers, all on their TV. The demise of WatchOn appears to be true, except for those customers in Korea or the U.S., but for the rest on the world, including Canada, it will be going away come December 31. Samsung sent out this notice:
“On December 31st, 2014, Samsung WatchON will discontinue full service in all markets, except the United States and Korea. We would like to assure customers that content previously purchased through Samsung WatchON will not be affected and will remain accessible through the relevant content provider’s application. We ask all customers with questions or concerns to please contact our customer support team by visiting the following website: http://help.content.samsung.com.”
Ever since the debut of the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung has a new App called Smart Remote, and this may eventually replace the WatchOn app on their older devices that acts as BOTH a remote control application and as a TV Guide. Please hit us up on our Google+ Page and let us know if you use either the older WatchOn application or the new Smart Remote…as always, we would love to hear from you.
