Robin Williams, the Sochi Winter Olympics and Ebola were atop Google’s searches for 2014 [VIDEO]

The end of the year is nearing at a fast pace, and it’s that time of year to take a look back at everything the world searched for in 2014. Google released their Year in Search rundown to tell us what, exactly, folks were searching for the most. The list won’t come as much of a surprise as all these topics were hotly debated, talked about and watched.

The Sochi Winter Olympics were obviously on the minds of many as it was one of the biggest major sporting events of the year. This year’s contests saw the biggest additions of women-inclusive activities in a long time — 12, according to the Sochi Organizing Committee — which likely did its part to get more of the female demographic glued to their TV screens.

The FIFA World Cup 2014 was another obvious top contender on this list. The spectacle only comes around once every four years, so it’s a big deal for fans to cheer on the countries they’re native to. Specifically, Google notes people were searching for the highest margin of victory in a World Cup match after Germany toppled Brazil with a score of 7 to 1 in the semifinals.

Other big topics included the sudden, saddening death of beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams, the recent scare of an Ebola breakout and its surfacing on United States soil, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that helped spread more awareness in 2014 than the cause had ever seen. Oh, and apparently people went crazy over Flappy Bird and Pharrell’s Hat, so there’s that.

Just like any year, 2014 introduced a lot of great stories. Whether good or bad, whether they made you happy or sad, Google’s laid it all out for you to check out right here. Let us know which stories captured your interest the most in the comments section below.
