Blackberry Assisting In Boeing’s Development Of Secure Smartphone Called ‘The Black’

Mobile security is probably important now more than it has ever been, and is part of the reason we have seen a rise in more security oriented apps and devices hitting development and getting released to the public. The rising importance of mobile security is also the reason why we have seen the development and launch of devices like the Blackphone from secret circle, and the now upcoming smartphone being developed by Boeing (yes, the corp. that builds airplanes) called The Black, and they are getting a little help from Blackberry creating this device. We first heard about this device back at the end of February, right around the time of Mobile World Congress, however this is the first we’ve heard of Blackberry’s involvement in the development process.

The telegraph reports that Blackberry’s involvement is to help make The Black more secure, and the device will be running on the BES12 software platform according to Blackberry’s CEO John Chen, although he stated that the device using BES12 is “all he was allowed to say on the development of the device,” so we don’t have much else in the way of details for specs. We do however know a little bit about some of the suspected hardware, and some of it actually sounds a little interesting.

The Black will potentially be equipped with swappable backplates to allow for satellite or radio capabilities and solar charging. It’s also thought to have Dual-SIM capabilities which only seems natural for a device centered around complete security for individuals that might travel. Although not confirmed, The Black could also include biometric sensors, and a tamper-proof case that would implement a self destruct like feature(all data would be wiped out)if the phone was stolen and someone attempted to open up the back. Exact details on the phones components aren’t known, and there is no information on what aspects both Boeing and Blackberry will be handling (short of Blackberry’s focus on the software platform) however it’s said that the planning and development of this device has been in the works since 2012, so whatever these two companies come up with should be interesting at the very least, especially when in contrast to the Blackphone. We’re not sure if this will a consumer available device, but we know one thing. If Jon Snow were to pick a smartphone, we’re pretty sure he’d be taking The Black. Too much?
