Nothing quite says you’ve arrived like your personal video surveillance drone. And what DJI offers with the Inspire One is so much more than that.
This four-rotor drone is essentially a highly refined flying machine with a Hollywood-level, high-definition video camera attached to it – guaranteed to make your friends’ GoPro clips look pretty lame by comparison.
Order the Inspire One, and you get a fully functioning drone with almost no assembly acquired. Four rotor blades provide lifting power, and the One folds its legs up in takeoff so only the camera protrudes from the bottom of your craft. The controls work via the combination of a remote and an iPad app, which allows you to set home location via GPS so you can fly your little copter buddy on predetermined routes (potentially drawing them with your finger!) and always have it return to the same spot – or directly to you, depending on your preference.
The iPad app is also how you view the cameras equipped on the Inspire One, thanks to the Lightbridge software developed by DJI. One basic camera keeps an eye on the ground and is handy for charting nearby territory and keeping your bird stabilized. The other camera is an impressive 4K, 30FPS, 12 million-pixel beast, equipped with a 9-element lens and the potential to take flawless video and photos.
Two remotes are available, one for flight and one to control the cameras if necessary, so you can have a dedicated cameraman follow a particular target. A ring of sensors is also included to help balance and control the drone in more cramped spaces. From the almost-professional moviemaker to the ultimate tour guide/nature lover, this drone may just be the best pet you’ve ever had.
In case you are already throwing money at the screen, there is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that DJI has designed the Inspire One to be as affordable as possible, especially compared to its top models. The bad news is that the retail price is still $2,800, which is a little steep for the average amateur. You may want to start saving up sooner than later. It’s also a good idea to remember that previous experience in drone flying is highly suggested before taking the One for a spin.
