Google’s Search App Can Now Search In Your Other Apps

Voice search is… just not popular. There are a variety of reasons for this, ranging from relative imprecision to the fact that you don’t want to announce a lot of your searches in public. Nobody wants to be the guy who says to his phone at the coffee shop, “OK Google, find me pictures of kittens.” But Google is pushing ahead, and wants to make it even more useful.

OK, Google, Search My Apps

How? By, essentially, handing over its search to pretty much any developer who asks. As a result, you can search just by asking your phone, essentially. If you need every GIF of some subject from Tumblr, a quick request of your phone and you’ll have anything that triggers the search term.

It’s being implemented across a surprising number of apps, not least because Google has worked hard to make it as simple to add as humanly possible. Apps ranging from food ordering apps to real-estate shopping apps have been implementing the code. Admittedly, few people will use it, but it’s still something we can find handy when we absolutely need it.

It’s a minor touch, it’s true, and not every app developer will implement it, even if it’s easy to do. Still, if you need to find something, or just want to talk to your phone to hunt something down, it’s nice to know voice search has been so dramatically expanded.
