Ex-Google Inc. Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora has joined on as a member of Sprint’s board of director’s this morning. He was previously serving as Softbank Internet and Media Inc.’s Chief Executive Officer, a position he has been holding since last month. This induction into the board of director’s at Sprint places them at a total of nine board members. This marks one more notch on the executive belt for Arora, as he has held numerous executive level positions during his time at Google, and was also the Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile Europe while also serving on their management board.
Arora also serves as the Vice Chairman of Softbank Corp., so seeing him join the board of directors for the U.S. wireless carrier that Softbank owns probably isn’t a huge shock. Masayoshi Son, Softbank’s CEO and Chairman of the Sprint board of director’s states that they’re “very fortunate to have Nikesh join the Sprint board at this important juncture,” citing that he will bring a “broad experience” to the company thanks to his extensive experience in leadership roles at leading technology companies. Right now there is no detail on what exactly Arora’s specific role and responsibilities will be within Sprint, but Son feels he will be able to provide valuable insight that will help to keep Sprint on a competitive level with other carriers in the industry and help the company grow.
Sprint is currently the nation’s third largest wireless carrier in the U.S. although T-Mobile is close behind only lacking a couple million customers compared to the total numbers of subscriber’s that Sprint currently holds themselves. Bringing on Arora as another board member could give them an edge they need to compete more and possibly help with their growth. Sprint has been making major overhauls to their network but more recently their CEO Marcelo Claure has been bringing changes to their plans and pricing in attempt to shake things up, like their possible introduction of no contracts and phone subsidies sometime next year if the pilot program they’re currently running on phone leasing goes well.
