Time and time again, the mobile tech industry has proven to be one where size really does matter. Specs and features have become so uniform in the high-end market that we no longer see them as differentiators anymore. These super tablets are all fast, they are all powerful, and what we really want is something that fits our lifestyle.
I am not speaking alone when I say larger tablets are no longer as awesome as they used to be, especially with Windows 8.1 tablets (which are full-fledged computers) now proliferous. There is no longer a place in my bag for a tablet that nears the size of my laptop.
I stand by the idea that the the iPad Mini 3 is better than the iPad Air 2. And this doesn’t only apply to these specific tablets. Contrary to other applications of the phrase – size does matter, and in this case I prefer smaller.
Portability and comfort
Large tablets are just large, clunky and burdensome when on-the-move. More often than not, I find myself struggling to take it anywhere, even when i take my “man purse” around. We can argue those tablets are not designed to take around, right?
Maybe they are meant to use in your room, in the living room, kitchen, or anywhere around a set location like a house or office. Even in said situations the iPad Air 2’s size seems to be an inconvenience!
Have you tried to watch a movie holding an iPad? Doesn’t work out quite well. Your arms get tired of holding it and it’s hard to get comfortable. I have had a much more comfortable experience with the iPad Mini’s size.
And you know the dreaded instances when you are using your phone in bed, it slips out of your hands and falls right on your face? It happens with the larger-sized iPad Air 2, and the hits are much harder.
I would really much rather use something much more maneuverable. The iPad Mini 3 and other smaller tablets will take care of the job.
Spec difference
Is there really a big difference in specs when it comes to larger and smaller devices? You may find the occasional differences in battery life, but other components tend to be the same. I see similar, if not identical options for processors, amount of RAM and even storage.
This is the case with most tablet series which have multiple size versions. But even if we could only fit lesser specs in a smaller device, I wouldn’t mind giving up some thinness for equal specs. This seems to be what happened with the new generation iPads. The iPad Air 2 is only 6.1 mm thick, while the iPad Mini 3 is 7.5 mm thick.
The iPad Air does come with a new A8x processor, which is better than the iPad Mini 3’s A7 chip. I believe this is more of a selling technique, though. Do you really think the A8x just didn’t fit in an iPad Mini 3? Please….
Screen real estate?
Yes, we could argue you will get less screen with a smaller device, but that really all depends on the display at use. For example, a 10.1-inch QHD display really offers the same screen real estate as an 8-inch QHD display.
The only difference is that one displays content smaller, but at the same definition. And it’s important to note the smaller one would have higher PPI, making content even more clear.
An easy way to understand this is by turning things around. Which has more screen real estate, a 5-inch 1080p smartphone display or a 32-inch 720p screen? Interestingly enough, the 5-inch 1080p smartphon screen does, because you have more pixels to work with. The larger TV will display less, but in a bigger area. It’s all relative.
In this case, the iPad Air 2 does offer the same amount of pixels than the iPad Mini 3. Nothing to lose here, guys.
You won’t look as ridiculous taking a photo
I literally laughed when I heard the Apple team talking about how the iPad was great for taking pictures. It’s understandable to say it has a better liveview experience and good editing capabilities, but no one can get away with taking a picture with an iPad without annoying at least one stranger.
Pull up a an iPad in front of me at a concert and I will feel very enticed to push you into the mosh pit! Not only does it look ridiculous, but it often inconveniences people around you. Especially in crowded places.
Who even needs a 10-inch iPad?
With all that said, I can tell you with an open heart that I don’t need a 9.7-inch iPad (or a 10-inch Android tablet). I say a good size is somewhere between 7 and 9 inches. Anything higher and I would rather use a Windows tablet or laptop. Anything smaller and I would rather use my smartphone.
Keep in mind this is nothing but my opinion, though. Many of you will see things differently and that is completely understandable. Maybe you are stronger than me and you have an easier time handling an iPad Air 2! Let us know where you side in the comments below.
