The Android 5.0 Lollipop SDK Is Officially Live For Developers

Developers, start your engines. It’s Friday October 17th and the Android 5.0 Lollipop SDK is now available for you to download and tinker with. Got a great new idea for an app and just waiting for the SDK to implement that idea and turn it into a tangible piece of software that users can download and use? That time is now. For anyone that doesn’t know, the SDK is the software development kit for developers that Google releases every time a new version of the Android OS gets released. It contains all the APIs and tools one would need, not to mention all kinds of goodies and things like the already existing stock apks that Lollipop already contains, like the dialer, the messenger app for SMS and MMS, and so on. All of that stuff can be rooted out of the SDK once people are able to get their hands on it.

Now that the SDK is out as promised, it probably won’t be long before we start to see some more apps out there with Lollipop style animations, along with apps that might take advantage of the new camera API, the JobScheduler, and those animations at 60FPS. Lots of exciting stuff for developers to work with, and once developers take those tools and apply it to apps, it translates to exciting stuff for users too. Developers should also expect to be able to play around with all the new performance improvements that come along with the Android 5.0 Lollipop SDK which if utilized should make their apps run a lot smoother, and in the end that will make the users happy too, which in turn will delight developers because more users will be pleased with their apps.

Of course other notable things will come along with the SDK, like all those Material Design elements that will now be possible to implement, giving off bold colors and smooth animations that just make things look and feel more lively, more interactive. Perhaps with the drop of the SDK, we’ll see more developers begin to make their apps compatible with the ART runtime, even though that is something that could have been done months ago. Do you develop apps for Android or know someone who does? What excites you most about the Lollipop SDK? Let us know your thoughts in the comments on G+. Ready to dig into the SDK yourself?
